From a Plain Vanilla Wall to Black Magic! Entry Makeover to our Dome!

Ever had a long, blank wall in your house that just… sits there? No personality, no charm, nothing to draw the eye? Well, mine was that wall — stretching from the entryway into the living space, dead space that needed some serious love. So, I decided to turn it into something totally magical — and trust me, the difference is like night and day!

The Before: A Long, Boring Void

This wall was just… plain. Nothing on it, no texture, no color, no visual interest. It was easy to ignore — except that it made the space feel a bit dull, like it was waiting for something special. I knew it was time for a makeover, but I wanted to do something bold, something big, and something that would truly stand out.

Going from Vanilla to Black Magic

My husband wasn’t sold on a black wall, but decided to trust me on this one! I decided to embrace a daring, high-contrast look — with a deep black paint. This wasn’t just about painting a wall; this was about creating a statement piece, a backdrop that would elevate the whole space and make everything else pop.

A dramatic black wall and a few pieces from my pottery collection, art, photos, and even some fun DIY pieces to add personality.

The Transformation Process

Prep & Prime: First, I cleaned the wall thoroughly and filled in any holes or imperfections. I applied a coat of primer to ensure the black paint would go on smooth and true.

Striking Paint Choice: For the boldest effect, I wanted a rich, deep black that catches the light beautifully. I used a high-quality roller and cut in the edges with a good brush for crisp lines. Two coats were enough to get that perfect, opaque black.

Add Visual Interest: Once the paint dried, I layered in photographs, and decorative pieces. I don’t have tons of walls for hang art, a challenge of a geodesic home so I wanted to create a family gallery. I did this renovation in Oct, so added Halloween art to embrace the holiday. The contrast of the bright art against the dark background really made everything pop.

Lighting: Good lighting makes a big difference, our lighting was built in, but was so much darker on the black paint, we noticed there were only half the bulbs in the fixture so filled in the missing bulbs. That helped but I hated the shiny gold color on the light covers… When all else fails, use spray paint. I painted the grates a flat black and now the art is even more dramatic.

The cabinets are from Amazon, we ended up with 5 of these, 2 under the TV and 3 for storage along the wall.
