When you buy a geodesic dome home, you expect a few quirks. Odd angles? Yes. Creative storage challenges? Absolutely. But discovering two half baths almost right next to each other was just… odd. One was fully functional, and the other was a small room that had plumbing but no purpose. And truly — who needs two half baths in such close proximity?
In a dome — and probably in everyone’s home — every square foot needs to earn its keep. That quirky little room quickly went from “why is this here?” to “oh, we can make something out of this.”
Finding the Opportunity Hidden in the Weirdness
After living in the dome for a bit, it became obvious what we were missing: pantry storage. We needed a functional pantry, especially since removing a few cabinets from our kitchen layout meant losing traditional storage.
And there it was…
That sad little half‑bath‑to‑be had the perfect footprint for the walk‑in pantry the kitchen desperately needed.
Transforming the Space: Simple, Functional, and Totally Worth It
Once we made the decision, everything clicked. The transformation was almost instant. The room already had enough space — it just needed purpose. Instead of a room we’d never use, we created a hardworking pantry that supports our day‑to‑day life and keeps the kitchen from becoming clutter central.
We built open shelving in an L‑shape along two walls, sturdy and deep enough for small appliances. The open design keeps everything visible and easy to reach (and makes me feel more organized than I actually am).
I used the same paint color we used on the kitchen cabinets — because why not use what you already have? We built the shelves from plywood and installed heavy‑duty brackets that can handle the weight of pantry staples and appliances.
(We attached all the brackets to the wall studs, built a bottom base with plywood.)
The result? A clean, functional pantry that instantly made our kitchen work better and our home feel more efficient.
Why This Change Matters in Dome Living
Geodesic homes challenge you to think differently about space. Rooms don’t always serve traditional purposes, and sometimes the best thing you can do is embrace the weird and shape it into something that truly fits your life.
And before anyone compares it to those perfectly styled social media pantries with matching jars and labels everywhere, let’s be honest—this pantry is lived in. Some days it’s beautifully organized, and other days it’s not. That’s real life, and I’m perfectly okay with that.
What I love most isn’t that it’s picture-perfect—it’s that it functions exactly the way we need it to. Every shelf gets used, every appliance has a home, and the space works hard for us every day.
Converting an unnecessary half bath into a pantry didn’t just improve our storage — it made our home feel more ours. It’s another small win in our journey to transform this quirky dome into a warm, intentional, beautifully functional space… one triangle at a time.
